Barely a month after Radius Pizzeria owners Mick and Kate Carroll opened a dessert shop called Yum next door to their restaurant, they’ve had to close it temporarily. Seems the cooler they’ve been using to make frozen confections at Radius isn’t quite up to the task of keeping the freezers of a dedicated gelateria filled. They expect to reopen by the end of June.
In the meantime, Yum’s website ( yumdesserts.net) and Facebook page (still in the works) should be live in a week or so. You’ll be able to check them for status updates, and to salivate over a rotating selection of gelato flavors ranging from chocolate bourbon pecan pie to lemon bar with scratch-made shortbread crumbles. Even the no-sugar-added flavors (recently, mango-cardamom) sound tempting.
“The lime-cilantro is amazing,” Kate Carroll says, “and now that lime prices are back down we’ll be able to offer it again.”
Yum (118 N. Churton St.; 919-316-9013) also offers a tempting assortment of sorbets (“the chocolate is so rich you won’t believe it’s a sorbet”), as well as old-fashioned treats such as root beer floats and banana splits. Made-to-order crepes with fillings ranging from seasonal local fruit to homemade chocolate-hazelnut spread are, you might say, icing on the cake.
