The owner of Big Mike’s Brew N Que has opened a second location in Apex’s Beaver Creek Crossings.

This is the latest from Mike Markham, 38, who started his Big Mike’s BBQ food truck five years ago. The truck was so popular that after three years Markham opened what he thought would be a bottle shop and barbecue takeout place in Cary. Based on customer demand, it turned out to be more of a sit-down restaurant and bottle shop, offering up to 300 craft beers from North Carolina and elsewhere in the South.

Big Mike’s is known for its barbecue (Eastern NC-style chopped pasture-raised pork and brisket) but also for its smoked wings (smoked, then fried in the fat recovered from the smoker and tossed in a dry rub), and their warm potato salad where the potatoes are also fried in the smoked animal fat.

Markham said he decided to open a second location in the space formerly occupied by Amedeo’s Italian restaurant at the Beaver Creek Crossings shopping center. The 1,900-square-foot space offers 50 seats inside and another 30 to 40 seats outside when the weather warms up. It also has a bottle shop with a similar craft beer selection.

Since Apex is such a family-centered area, the Apex location has a kid’s corner with a chalkboard wall and toys. “That’s all Apex is is families,” says Markham, who also calls Apex home.

That’s not the end of Markham’s expansion plans. He said they will get a new truck in 2017 and expand the Cary location by taking over the Great Harvest bakery space next door to add a small batch brewery and event space.
