Durham cooking classes: Southern cakes, Valentine’s treats, Italian winter dishes

Durham Spirits Co., the home-based cooking school, has several interesting upcoming 2-hour classes:

▪ Southern Cakes at 1 p.m. Jan. 29. Chef Audra Thomas of Honey Buns Baking Co. and Monuts will show students how to make Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese frosting; Hummingbird cake; pound cake; and Southern praline pecan cake. Cost: $59.

▪ Valentine’s Treats for your Sweetheart at 1 p.m. Feb. 5. Students will learn to make truffles, chocolate dipped-strawberries; mini pavlovas; variety of petit fours; and bittersweet chocolate mousse with raspberries. Cost: $59.

▪ Winter in Italy at 6 p.m. Feb. 10. The menu is prosciutto and mushroom tart; maiale al latte: pork roast braised with milk and herbs; red wine braised cipolinni onions; roasted balsamic carrots; gnocchi alla Romana; and cannoli Napoleons. Cost: $59.

The school is at 3222 Old Chapel Hill Road, Durham.
