Phoebe Lawless, owner of Durham’s Scratch Bakery, is opening The Lakewood, a full-service restaurant and bar in Durham this spring.

This restaurant is part of a broader expansion plan for Lawless, a four-time James Beard award semifinalist.

Lawless is not only opening The Lakewood, a 90-seat restaurant and bar with a rooftop terrace serving lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, at 2022 Chapel Hill Road. Lawless is also opening a second Scratch Bakery cafe and a wholesale production bakery to supply baked goods to various restaurants and retailers in the same location as The Lakewood. (Cool fact: This building was home to the Davis Baking Co. for more than 60 years.)

“The space itself is exceptionally gorgeous,” Lawless said in a statement. “It’s got crown molding and a tin ceiling and plaster walls.”

(Linton Architects and interior designer Alicia Hylton-Daniel are working on transforming the space.)

Lawless is well-known in the Triangle dining scene. She trained for eight years under one of the country’s best pastry chefs, Karen Barker, herself a James Beard award winner, at the now closed Magnolia Grill in Durham. She spent three years developing a following selling sweet and savory pies made from local ingredients at local farmers markets. In 2010, she opened Scratch, a small bakery and cafe in downtown Durham.

With The Lakewood, Lawless hopes to create a comfortable neighborhood restaurant offering a menu she could not produce at Scratch. Like at Scratch, it will feature seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients. But unlike Scratch, it will serve more proteins and fish and will have a casual 24-seat bar serving craft cocktails, local and regional beers on tap and small but selective wine list.

Joining Lawless in the kitchen is chef Brooks Cameron, a Culinary Institute of America grad who has worked with such chefs as Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi (Parm, Carbone, Dirty French) and, most recently, Matt McAllister of FT33 in Dallas.
