Sunday is Greek Orthodox Easter, which would not be complete without Greek Easter Bread, also known as tsoureki.

Last year, Debbie Moose wrote about Artemis “Artie” Sarayiotes, who has baked the bread to sell at her church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Raleigh. (That’s the church behind Raleigh’s annual Greek Festival.) We asked Sarayiotes to share her recipe for our new site, The Recipe. This sweet, yeast bread gets its distinctive flavor from mahlepi, aka mahlab, a spice made from the seed kernels of a particular type of cherry tree. You can find mahlepi at Savory Spice Shop in North Raleigh and Mariakakis Fine Food & Wine in Chapel Hill.
