Earlier this year, when I reported on the opening of a third location of Gonza Tacos y Tequila in Durham, I said it looked like owner Gonza Salamanca had a hit on his hands. Make that a home run.
Just a few months later — and barely four years after the original Gonza opened in North Raleigh — Salamanca and partner Carlos Rodriguez have announced that they’re shooting for an October opening of a fourth location in the new Aloft Hotel on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. The timing will depend on the completion date of the hotel.
The partners are toning down the trademark Gonza decor a bit to suit the hotel location, and they’re expanding hours to include lunch and Sunday brunch (currently offered only at the Wake Forest location). Extended late night hours and a bar menu are aimed at the nearby NCSU crowd.
But Salamanca stresses that the new location will not sacrifice the key elements of Gonza’s winning formula: affordably priced menu of authentic Mexican, Colombian and Tex-Mex fare plus extensive tequila selection plus playfully funky decor equals good times. “The food will be the same,” he says, “and we won’t be doing any 99 cent margarita specials.”
You can track the progress of the newest Gonza Tacos y Tequila (2100 Hillsborough St., Raleigh; gonzatacosytequila.com) on the location's dedicated Facebook page: facebook.com/gonzatacosytequila.hillsboroughst.
