George’s Java officially opens Tuesday on Durham’s Ninth Street.
Owner Terry Metts said that they are doing tastings Monday but don’t officially open until 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Metts said he used to own a coffeehouse in Charlotte called Dilworth Coffee. He took three years off to learn how to roast coffee and sell it wholesale. He got married and moved to Durham where his wife, Debbie, lived. The couple were eating at Elmo’s one morning when Terry Metts said he noticed the empty storefront at 764-A Ninth St. and thought it would make a good coffeehouse. Metts said they roast their 100 percent organic coffee on site daily.
The coffeehouse will be open 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday. Closed on Sundays.
