Hillsborough’s Leland Little Auctions is hosting what it claims to be “the world’s largest auction” of Pappy Van Winkle whiskey on March 10.
The auction house will have more than 100 bottles from the much-sought-after Kentucky whiskey maker.
The lots include 13-, 15-, 20- and 23-year Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve whiskey plus an exclusive Old Rip Van Winkle 23-year bourbon. The latter bourbon was distilled in 1986 and hand-selected by Julian and Preston Van Winkle, according to a press release. It is sold with a Glencairn crystal decanter, glasses, leather-lined presentation box and carries a presale estimate of $5,500 to $6,500.
Mark Solomon, the auction house’s whiskey and fine-wine director, said the bottles were assembled from collectors across the United States.
How does he know it’s the world’s largest such auction?
“I did my research as much as possible,” Solomon said Monday. “There aren’t that many auction houses that do this kind of thing. I think we’re the biggest – and the biggest by a factor.”
Solomon said this auction came about because they sold some Pappy Van Winkle at a previous auction, fetched some good prices for those bottles and collectors started reaching out to consign.
Interest is already heating up. “I get an email once an hour,” said Solomon, including some from people who want to fly in for the event.
Those interested in bidding or consigning can contact Solomon at Mark@LelandLittle.com.
The auction is online now and open for bids: bit.ly/1QonJBu.
The auction house will open at 5 p.m. March 10 for people to watch the 6 p.m. live sale. The Hillsborough auction house is at 620 Cornerstone Court.
