We bought this antique hope chest at an estate auction in West Virginia back in the ’70s. My husband and I were newly married, and we had limited funds for furniture. When we saw the chest, it was love at first sight. It is lined with cedar and has a shelf fitted into the rails on each side. When we got it, it was black with a linseed oil finish. We decided to strip it down to the base wood and found that glorious wood grain hidden under all that darkness.
We’ve used it as an end table, first in our bedroom and now in the living area. It brings us memories of our 41 years together and the first project that we worked on as a married couple. Nothing in our home brings back those memories like this chest. What a great place to store other memories like wedding albums and yearbooks. Opening it up is a walk down memory lane.
