Mr. Edgar Whitfield Haggerty, Sr., 93, died Friday, June 12, 2015. Born in Newark, New Jersey on August 4, 1921, he was the son of Sherman S. and Gertrude Lamond Haggerty. The eruption of WW II led Mr. Haggerty into the US Navy where he saw battle as a Gunner’s Mate on numerous ships in the Pacific Theatre. After being honorably discharged, he began a long career as a machinist. Mr. Haggerty was a Mason and Past Patron of the Eastern Star. Together with his wife of 71 years, he relocated from Wake Forest to Kinston a few years prior to his death.
His surviving family includes his wife, Lilla “Ovie” Crawford Haggerty of Kinston; son, Ed Haggerty and wife, Donna of Morehead City; grandsons, Jarred Haggerty and Matthew Haggerty; great-grandchildren, Damien and Eli; and a sister, Ruth Carothers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Sherman Haggerty and Bob Haggerty.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held 4 PM Sunday, June 14, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill. The family will receive friends and family immediately following the service.
