Irene Smith, 85, of Juno Beach, FL and Raleigh, NC, formally of Quincy, IL died at 6:36 a.m. Wednesday (June 10, 2015) in Raleigh, NC.
Born October 22, 1929 in Quincy, Illinois, Irene was the daughter of Edgar and Celia May Patterson Singleton. She married Tillman B. Smith on January 7, 1961 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Irene was a 1947 graduate of Quincy High School and was a participant in the 1946 Miss Quincy Pageant. She enjoyed doing photography, crafts, archery, volunteering at a hospital in California, and traveling with her husband. Irene's real passion was doing genealogy and she was very good at it. She canvassed many cemeteries in Harnett County, North Carolina and published several books of marriages and death notices from the Fayetteville Observer from 1816 to 1865. Irene also wrote two books of poetry called memories and rhymes.
Irene was first employed as a bookkeeper for Burnup and Sims Construction in West Palm Beach, Florida. She later worked as a head Cashier for the Ivey Clothing Store chain in Raleigh, North Carolina for several years until her retirement.
Irene is survived by her husband, Tillman B. Smith; loving nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Opal Hughs.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Duffy officiating. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.
