Jewell Ballentine Stephens

Jewell Ballentine Stephens of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., passed away June 16, 2015, at the age of 101. She died peacefully, in the arms of her family and in the home of her daughter and granddaughter, both of whom cared for her with unceasing devotion during a period of declining health. While her loss leaves a void which is impossible to fill, the family takes comfort in the certain knowledge that she now rests, safely and serenely, in the arms of Jesus, her Lord and Savior, for all eternity.

The family received friends at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina, on Thursday evening, June 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church, 301 North Woodrow Street, Fuquay-Varina, Friday, June 19, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens, 905 Wake Chapel Road, Fuquay-Varina.

The daughter of Edward Hill Ballentine and Foy Olive Ballentine, Jewell was born August 18, 1913 in the Wilbon community of southwestern Wake County. In 1920 the family moved to Varina, North Carolina, and the house at 502 North Ennis Street has been Jewell’s home for the past 95 years. She was graduated from Fuquay Springs High School, 1930, and from Meredith College, 1934. In the same year she was appointed Postmistress of Varina, a job she cherished for eleven years. Thereafter she devoted herself entirely to her husband and family, and no words are adequate to express the magnitude of her gifts to them, the greatest of which was unqualified love.

We do, however, wish to make special mention of something she wrote in her autobiography, I am Jewell and This is My Story (2014): She stated that when she and her husband were married in 1942, it was the prayer of her heart that they would have a Christian home as they lived their lives together. As all who knew her will attest, this prayer of Jewell’s heart was answered fully and completely.

In addition to her parents, Jewell Ballentine Stephens was preceded in death by her husband, Mallie Bruns Stephens, and by her youngest son, William Henry Stephens. Further, her beloved brother, Olive T. Ballentine, gave his life in service to his country during World War II. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Stephens Johnson of Fuquay-Varina; by her twin sons Phillip Edward Stephens of Fuquay-Varina, and David Olive Stephens of Smithfield, NC. Jewell is also survived by her beloved granddaughter, Rhonda Ballentine Johnson of Fuquay-Varina, and by three daughters-in-law, Mary B. Stephens of Smithfield, Debbie L. Stephens of New York City, and Janice H. Stephens of Holly Springs, and by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved. The family wishes to express its special thanks to Dr. Joe B. Currin, Jr., her physician for fifty years, as well as to those who cared for her during her last days on earth, Tina, Vicky, and Brenda.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made in loving memory of Jewell to the church she loved and served for almost a century, Fuquay-Varina Baptist, at the address indicated above.
