Bruce Strickland, Jr., 81, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday at 11 am in the Arthur Christian Church.
Mr. Strickland was born on September 5, 1934 in Bell Arthur, NC. He was a 1951 graduate of Greenville High School and a 1956 graduate of Duke University. After graduation from Duke University, he was employed by Dun & Bradstreet from 1956 to 1965. From 1965 until March of 1996 he worked at the Division of Business and Industry and it successor, the NC Dept. of Commerce. He continued as the Executive Secretary of the NC Pollution Control and Industrial Facilities Financing Authority through 2000.
After serving at the pleasure of North Carolina governors for 32 years, Mr. Strickland retired in 1996 as Director of the Commerce Finance Center. During his tenure with State Government, he was twice named to the “Order of the Long Leaf Pine, once by Governor Holshouser in 1976 and by Governor Hunt in 1996.
After retirement, Bruce moved to his family home place that was originally built in 1900 in Bell Arthur, NC. He continued to commit himself to two activities which were always special to him, teaching Sunday School classes and choral singing. He taught Sunday school classes in Raleigh, Greenville, and Bell Arthur. He was a member of three church choirs and private Oratorical Societies in Greenville and New Bern.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bruce Strickland, longtime Pitt County Commissioner and tobacco farmer, and mother, Virginia Strickland, longtime public school teacher.
Bruce is survived by an extensive family whom he loved and that love was returned. They include a son Bruce Stanley Strickland and his wife Karen of Cary, NC, and their children Brandon and his wife Meghan and their daughter Ryan, and Kristi and her husband Jon; a son Stuart Jeffrey Strickland and his wife Katie of Southern Pines NC and their two children Jeffrey and Jake; the mother of his sons Dorothy Strickland of Cary, NC; a sister Vivian Poole and her two daughters Ginny Kochis and husband Dan and their three children, Gray, Brinson and Finley and Rachel Jerez and her husband Julio and their son James.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home Friday from 6–8 pm.
