James Daniel Pickett, 79, of Raleigh, NC, died Thursday June 18, 2015. His love of music, support of family and kind spirit were well known and cherished by those he encountered throughout his life. A longtime member of Highland United Methodist Church, he sang in the choir, participated in church activities and shared with everyone his love of gardening. He was a teller of stories and until his recent decline, would recount with alacrity historical events and personal anecdotes from his world travels as the son of a military father. He was a graduate of Duke University who dearly loved his Blue Devils.
His career was devoted to government service for the NC Department of Human Resources, Division of Social Services, as a regional consultant in the IV-D Program of Child Support Enforcement. He retired at 63 and enjoyed gardening, cooking for his family and fellowshipping with friends until his passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Eugene Pickett and Queoga Ward Pickett of Raleigh, NC and his brother, George Eugene Pickett, Jr. of Cary, NC. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Harris Pickett of Raleigh, NC, as well as two daughters, Celeste Harris Pageau of Cary, NC and Roslyn Queoga Pickett of Raleigh, NC, and by his granddaughter, Ellen Dianne Hayes of Raleigh, NC.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 23 at 3:00 pm at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC with a brief time of visitation following. Memorial donations should be directed to the Highland UMC Music Ministry, indicating in memory of J. Daniel Pickett.
