A true Durham girl, Caroline Sasser passed away peacefully Friday morning. Caroline was born at Watts Hospital, graduated from Durham High School in 1951 and the Women's College (now UNC-Greensboro) in 1955. Caroline met Durham native Louis Sasser on a blind date on New Year's Eve 1956...and they were married six months later. Caroline was a teacher and the Director of Duke Memorial Weekday School for 20 years from 1970 to 1990. She was a member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, House and Garden Club, a past member of the Junior League, a devoted volunteer at Caring House and an active member of the Life Enrichment Committee at Croasdaile Village.
She will be greatly missed by her beloved husband, Louis; her brother, Charles (Iris) of Durham; daughter, Susan (David) of Atlanta; and sons Louie (Tammy) and Fuller (Erika) of Durham. “Sassy” adored her precious grandchildren Tate, Bennett, Lucy Caroline, Fuller, Kate and Helen.
A Memorial Service will be held at Duke Memorial on Monday, August 17 at 11:00 am with a reception to follow at the church. But be forewarned, much like Caroline, the Sassers are a family of criers, so expect some tears.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to the Duke Memorial Weekday School for a special project honoring Caroline.
