Nellie Baarslag Poster, beloved wife of the late Gerbrand Poster, died on August 9, 2015. She was 98 years old.
The daughter of the late Anton Frederik and Casperine Hermine (Groeneveld) Baarslag, Nellie was born on Long Island, New York, on 24 August 1916. She spent the next 18 years of her life alternating between New York and Amsterdam, the Netherlands, then attended the Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris, graduating with a degree in fashion design.
She worked in New York designing fashions (primarily knitwear) for various houses and publications, perhaps most notably the monthly magazine Woman’s Day. She married Gerbrand Poster in 1940, and in 1951 they and their young family moved to Briarcliffe Acres, near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she opened a yarn shop, as her husband began Coastal Federal Savings and Loan. As they raised their family, she also continued her design work; among her many projects were a knitwear line for Tina Leser designs and the altar kneelers for The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
Nellie loved teaching, and after retiring from business she formed various small groups of women who wished to learn the arts and crafts of needlework.
