Hoyt Quattlebaum Bailey, age 88, died Saturday August 15, 2015 at Wendover Hospice House. Mr. Bailey was born on April 17, 1927, in Forest City, NC. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Shelby. A graduate of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Textiles. As a lifelong Wolfpacker, Hoyt's legacy involving NC State is well known throughout the community and beyond. He was instrumental in the development and success of NC State sports and its student athletes.
His employment in the textile industry included Yarn Sales at JP Stevens, many years with Dover Textiles in Yarn Sales, and as Executive Vice President, and later President of his own company DTI Yarn Sales, along with Tony Izzi, Jr. and Nancy Teasley Moore.
He also served the community as a Director and President of The Dover Foundation, Inc. Mr. Bailey’s exemplary service to the community is reflected in the many honors and accolades he received for his contributions in numerous civic, educational, athletic, philanthropic and faith-based endeavors.
Mr. Bailey was predeceased by the love of his life, Anne Dover Bailey; his parents, Hoyt G. and Meta Q. Bailey; and sisters Catherine Parsons, Ruby Price, and Mildred DePugh.

He is survived by his daughters, Melanie Knight and Cynthia Buckingham, both of Raleigh; son-in-law William A. Knight, husband of Melanie; granddaughters Anne Buckingham and Bailey Knight, also of Raleigh; and step grandson William Q. Knight (wife Jessica) of Cary. He is also survived by his sister Georgia DeForge of Hermitage, TN.
The family is being served by Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory where they will receive friends on Monday, August 17, from 6-8 pm. Services are to be held Tuesday, August 18, at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church in Shelby with Reverends K. Ray Hill, Tony Tench, and Robert Canoy officiating. A graveside service at Sunset Cemetery will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, PO Box 1764, Shelby, NC 28151; or to the Cleveland County Boys and Girls Club, PO Box 2001, Shelby NC 28151; or to the charity of donor’s choice.
