Samanage targets expansion in Cary

Samanage, a fast-growing business software company that recently raised $5 million in funding, expects to have 30 employees in Cary by the end of 2014 — nearly triple its current level.

“We’ll move out of this office space,” Darroll Buytenhuys, president of the Israel-based company, said in an interview at Samanage’s offices in Cary’s MacGregor Park. “We’ve outgrown it already.” Buytenhuys also heads the company’s U.S. subsidiary, which is headquartered in Cary.

Founded in 2007, today Samanage has 35 employees, including 11 in Cary. The privately held company doesn’t specify revenue numbers but Buytenhuys said sales have been growing about 30 percent each quarter for the past three years.

That revenue growth, in conjunction with the round of venture capital the company raised in October, is fueling the company’s hiring plans.

Samanage touts its information technology management software as being easy to use and cost-efficient. The company currently has nearly 400 small and mid-sized business and institutional customers worldwide, nearly two-thirds of which are in the U.S. Its customer list includes the Town of Cary, Consumer Reports and the College of the Holy Cross.

“SaaS (software as a service, also known as on-demand software) knows no boundaries,” Buytenhuys said of the company’s cloud-based offering. “We have customers in 42 countries.”

Samanage’s unified software includes two components: IT asset managment, which involves gathering and constantly updating key information about a company’s PCs and servers, everything from the brand and amount of memory to the different software applications they run and what version of the software is used; and a “service desk” feature that automatically logs in service requests for computer problems and monitors the actions taken.

There’s nothing new about this kind of software, but Buytenhuys said Samanage’s product is much more user-friendly than competing legacy software that has moved to the cloud without really taking advantage of the efficiencies the cloud offers.

On the local hiring front, Samanage’s first order of business is expanding its marketing team. That team will be led by Geoff Alexander, who was top marketing executive at email marketing company iContact and became a senior marketing executive at Vocus after it acquired iContact last year, Buytenhuys said.

Alexander is slated to join Samanage in January.
