With Earth Day coming up Wednesday, shoppers can prepare for an onslaught of "green" sales and promotions.
But Kerr Drug is doing something green that is a little more permanent.
The Raleigh company has revamped one store in Asheville and one in Raleigh into a new model called Naturally Kerr.
In those stores, nonhealth categories such as automotive and hardware were removed. Their space was filled with a wide range of natural and organic products.
The stores stock such items as gluten-free and allergy-free foods, kids' organic vitamins and supplements, and organic pet supplies and toys.
There is also a natural baby section with organic diapers, lotions and other products.
Along with sections dedicated to natural and organic products, there are also more of those items scattered throughout the stores.
So far, the Asheville store and the Raleigh store, in Harvest Plaza at Strickland and Six Forks roads, are the only two Naturally Kerr stores in the works.
The company says it might add more locations if the idea proves popular.
In downtown Raleigh, there are a couple of items to report:
The Busy Bee Café is open at 225 S. Wilmington St.
The building was once a café called the Busy Bee but has since lived lives as an auto repair shop and an appliance store.
Now newly renovated, the Busy Bee Café is part coffeehouse, part lunch spot and part nighttime bar -- designed to handle different crowds during different parts of the day.
The Hard Times Café on Glenwood South closed Tuesday. So far, there's no replacement tenant for the space.
And Rosie's Plate, the business that specializes in food for people with gluten, nut and other dietary restrictions, will be open on Saturdays starting this week. Rosie's is at 701 N. Person St.
In Cary, Daniel and Janet Perry are adding a third restaurant.
The proprietors of Daniel's Restaurant in Apex and Daniel's on Main in Fuquay-Varina have opened Spirits Pub & Grub in the old Triangle Grill location at 701 E. Chatham St.
Per its name, the sports-themed restaurant serves more pub-oriented food and less of the traditional Italian fare of the Perrys' other two restaurants.
In Raleigh, just in time for the Carolina Hurricanes' playoff run, the Backyard Bistro is open next to the RBC Center.
Backyard Bistro is the reincarnation of the long-vacated space that used to be Damon's Grill at 1235 Hurricane Alley Way.
Damon's closed in mid-2007 following a court order, but it was popular with both Canes fans and N.C. State fans. Backyard Bistro is keeping the sports theme, and it is open for lunch and dinner daily.
