Durham entrepreneur Tatiana Birgisson, founder of beverage startup Mati Energy, emerged as the winner in the highly competitive Google for Entrepreneurs Demo Day competition in Silicon Valley.
As a result, Mati Energy has snared a $100,000 investment from AOL co-founder Steve Case, one of the judges of Thursday’s event.
Mati was the only non-technology company that made a presentation and faced off against 11 tech companies, according to CNN Money.
Birgisson came up for the idea for her energy drink, which is formulated with tea, fruit juice and guayusa leaves, the second-most caffeinated plant behind coffee, while she was a student at Duke University.
Mati operates out of the American Underground startup hub in Durham.
Triangle e-commerce technology company Windsor Circle took home top honors at the first Google competition last year.
