Shop Talk reporter Virginia Bridges asked small-business owners what they did on Labor Day. This is what they said.
• “I worked on Labor Day even though M&M Tack Shop was closed,” said Michele Karwoski, owner of M&M Tack Shop, a Raleigh store that specializes in horseback riding apparel and equipment and Breyer horses. “We are doing renovations to make our shop more customer friendly so it was a good day to work on improvements.”
• “The Labor Day holiday was not laborious, but I did spend it in Durham, where I live and work downtown. And we ate, drank and reflected on all of the wonderful changes since I began my career,” said Alison Paige Steele, owner of interior design firm A+S Design. “The weekend was the 10-year anniversary of American Tobacco Campus, where most of my commercial career had been focused and at the time had no idea how big the transformations we were part of were for Durham.”
• “I worked on my business for a couple of hours, but spent the rest of the day doing yard work and spending time with family,” said Jacquelle Leggett, owner/operator of International Minute Press Printing, a printing, marketing, and design company in Durham.
• “I closed up shop, and I took my family to the N.C. Zoo,” said Beth Flynn, owner of Groovy Duck Bakery in Raleigh. “These one-day holidays are great for family days since I typically work seven days a week. I didn’t think about the business at all.”
