Culbreth principal wins system honor

Culbreth Middle School Principal Jacqueline Ellis has been selected as the Chapel Hill-Carrboro principal of the year.

Ellis was named principal of Culbreth in July 2003. She had previously served as a principal intern at East Chapel Hill High in 1999 and as a summer school math teacher at Phillips Middle in 1999.

"Jackie is a strong school leader who has brought about some dramatic improvements to Culbreth Middle School," Superintendent Neil Pedersen said.

Before coming to the district, Ellis taught math and language arts in Pitt County and math in Guilford County. She has also served as assistant principal at Riverside High School in the Durham Public Schools.

Ellis has a bachelor of science in middle grades education from East Carolina University and a master of school administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, where she was also an N.C. Principal Fellow.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro principal of the year is selected by the principals' group. As the district principal of the year, Ellis will prepare a portfolio and will be a candidate for regional principal of the year.

Regional recipients will be selected in February, and the state's principal of the year will be announced in May.
