Kenly Police Chief David Mangum has been fired amid allegations that he used the town credit card to buy personal items, town officials said.
Mangum, who has been police chief in this Johnston County town since 2001, is also being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation on allegations of fraud, Johnston County District Attorney Tom Lock said.
Town Manager Scott Shelton visited with Lock on Friday to discuss some charges Mangum reportedly made on the town credit card over the last couple of months, Lock said. Lock contacted the SBI to investigate.
Lock declined to say what had been charged on the credit cards.
Kenly Police Sgt. Josh Gibson will head Kenly's police department for the time being, Shelton said.
