The UNC-Chapel Hill study calculated benefits costs for a 40-year-old employee paying for family medical and dental coverage, retirement, life insurance, long-term disability benefits and parking.
An employee earning $25,000 spent 36 percent of gross pay on benefits, about $750 a month, compared with an average of 16 percent at peer institutions.
An employee earning $75,000, spent about 16 percent on benefits, about twice as much as those at peer schools.
