For more than a decade, the Orange County Board of Commissioners has debated whether the city and and county school systems are funded fairly.
EQUAL FUNDING: The county funds the two systems on an equal per-pupil basis.
UNEQUAL TAX: The debate concerns a special property tax levied only in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district. The tax, which county commissioners set, gives the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools an extra $14 million a year. The Orange County Schools has no such tax because voters in that district rejected one by a 4-to-1 margin In November.
