After The News & Observer published its series, "North Carolina Water: Safe to Drink?" Gov. Mike Easley said he would ask the legislature for $2.4 million to strengthen regulation of public water systems and private wells. State officials also say they will push for legislation requiring tests of private wells and will be more aggressive in fining operators of water systems that repeatedly fail tests or fail to perform them.
