Oct. 8: Some veterans advocates say veterans of the latest wars are getting preferential treatment over those of all other wars. The El Paso Times made public a memo in which Vice Admiral Daniel L. Cooper, undersecretary for benefits, instructs VA employees to put veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom at the head of the line when processing claims for medical treatment, vocational rehabilitation, employment and education benefits.
Oct. 5: A special commission recommends an immediate increase of up to 25 percent in veterans' disability payments as part of a major overhaul designed to compensate for a wounded warrior's lost "quality of life." A new study says the Pentagon and VA fall "woefully short" in helping veterans.
