Police arrested a 15-year-old girl Sunday, accusing her of trying to shoot her mother while she slept.
Clayton officers responded to a 911 call asking for a welfare check at a home off Amelia Church Road about 8 a.m. Sunday.
The teenager used her father’s handgun, which he kept in a holster beside his bed, to fire a shot, Clayton police said. The weapon later was found somewhere else in the home.
The girl’s mother was not injured, police said.
Based on interviews with the family, police said the teenager fired the gun after her father got up to use the bathroom early in the morning.
The mother awoke when she heard a loud noise and saw her daughter standing at the foot of the bed. The teenager then ran from the bedroom, her parents told Clayton police.
Officers found a bullet hole in the mattress.
The teenager’s name hasn’t be released because she is a minor. She was being held at the Wake County Juvenile Detention Center Sunday night.
