Chocolates, roses and jewelry remain favorite options for Valentine’s Day gifts, but it appears some folks are thinking outside the box this year.

North Carolina is one of a handful of states where YETI coolers are among the top-5 Valentine’s Day gifts, according a study by discount shopping website offers.com.

The study analyzed hundreds of gift-related keywords, based on the percentage increase in February searches compared to the rest of the year and weighed by search volume according to Google search data.

YETI coolers came in as the No. 5 gift in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and the No. 4 gift in Connecticut and the company’s home state of Texas. Sunglasses made the list as the No. 4 gift in the Carolinas.

Other states also have their quirks.

Cutting boards, whiskey and gummy bears made the top-5 in Wyoming. Flasks made the list in Kansas.

Engagement rings were the top entry for Alaska, men’s rings were tops in Vermont, and romance books are apparently items of interest in Colorado.

Men will spend an average of $17 more than women on Valentine’s Day gifts this year, according to a nationwide survey of more than 1,000 customers included in the study.
