Durham motorcyclist killed in accident

A motorcyclist was killed in Durham on Saturday after colliding with a vehicle.

Durham police said the accident happened near the intersection of Miami Boulevard and Robinhood Road at about 2:30 p.m.

Donald Riley, the driver of a 2012 Kawasaki ZX1000 J motorcycle, was driving northbound on N. Miami Boulevard.

Riley, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened when Arita Barahona, the driver of a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser, attempted to cross Miami Boulevard from Robinhood Road. The motorcyclist crashed into the Cruiser’s driver’s door.

Barahona failed to yield the right-of-way, according to Durham police’s preliminary investigation.

Barahona and her passenger, Jonathan Obando, were taken to Duke Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police charged Barahona with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Miami Boulevard was closed for a few hours at the scene.

Neither drugs, alcohol nor speed seemed to be a factor, police said.

Durham police continue to investigate.
