An overnight wreck on Interstate 440 on the east side of Raleigh shut down the eastbound lanes of the road for hours and sent several people to the hospital, police said Thursday.

Police began to reopen the highway shortly after 7:30 a.m.

The collision was around the 12-mile marker, between Capital Boulevard and New Bern Avenue.

Details of the wreck were not immediately available, but police described it as “a pretty bad collision.”

Wake County EMS sent five units to the crash scene, and paramedics took three adults to WakeMed Hospital, Assistant Chief Jeffrey Hammerstein said.

Two of the patients had serious injuries, Hammerstein said.
