State Fairgrounds opens storm shelter for horses

The State Fairgrounds in Raleigh is opening an evacuation site for horses whose owners want to get them out of harm’s way.

Owners can keep their horses at the The Hunt Horse Complex off Trinity Road until Sept. 24, when the complex will be closed to prepare for the State Fair horse shows.

Owners should call in advance to reserve a stall. Before 4 p.m. Thursday, the number is 919-839-4701; after 4 p.m., call 919-612-6767.

The Hunt Horse Complex will only offer housing to the horses; owners will need to bring food and other provisions for their animals. And the stalls will not be free; the fairgrounds will charge owners at a rate of $17 for one day and $3 for each additional day per stall.

Owners will also need to sign the standard housing agreement and liability waiver, which can be found here: nando.com/equine.
