Police in Durham say an 80-year-old woman died in a two-car collision Monday afternoon.

Durham police were called to the scene of a wreck in the 2200 block of So Hi Drive shortly before 3:15 p.m., according to a news release.

When they arrived at the scene in southeast Durham near the Triangle Curling Club, they found Mary Starks, a passenger in one of the vehicles, had died, investigators say.

Starks was a passenger in a van driven by Thomas Hamilton, a 72-year-old Apex man. They were struck by a pick-up truck driven by 56-year-old Scotty Johnson as they traveled west on So Hi Drive, police said. Investigators say Johnson was traveling east when he crossed the double yellow line and struck the van.

Johnson and Hamilton were transported to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

Johnson was charged with driving left of center, driving without insurance, driving while license revoked and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, police say.

Alcohol and drugs aren’t suspected at this time but the investigation is ongoing.
