An Amtrak train struck and killed a 16-year-old boy who was walking along the railroad tracks near Kenly early Sunday morning.
An Amtrak spokeswoman said the train was headed for New York when it “came into contact with a trespasser” near N.C. 581 at 2:42 a.m. The boy was not near a railroad crossing.
The victim has not yet been identified. The Wilson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident but does not think it involved “suspicious activity,” according to reports made to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
None of the 346 passengers or crew members on the train were injured, according to Amtrak. The crew operating the train requested to be relieved after the accident, and a new crew arrived within hours to continue the trip.
