Paratroopers injured in lightning strike at Fort Bragg

Eighteen paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division were injured by a lightning strike Wednesday evening during a live-fire training exercise, the Army said.

All were taken to Womack Army Medical Center on post, none with life-threatening injuries, according to the military. One was later taken to UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill for precautionary monitoring. That soldier was in stable condition Thursday, the Army said.

The paratroopers had been in the field since Tuesday morning. A thunderstorm rolled through the area Wednesday evening as the paratroopers were switching from day to night exercises.

All the injured were admitted to the hospital within an hour, according to the Army.
