Dogs, cats rescued from Raeford shelter now up for adoption

Many of the 700 cats and dogs seized during a raid in Hoke County this winter will be available for adoption this weekend in Sanford ,where the animals are being warehoused.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is holding the adoption event Friday through Sunday at a temporary shelter at 2215 Nash Street. Adoptions will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

Many of the dogs and cats were malnourished and injured when they were rescued in January from The Haven, an unlicensed no-kill shelter in Raeford. The ASPCA set up a temporary shelter in Sanford, where it says the animals received medical attention and behavioral care to prepare them for adoption.

The Haven’s owners, Stephen and Linden Spear, were arrested and charged with several counts of cruelty to animals and possession of controlled substances.

All the animals have been spayed or neutered, and adoption fees will be waived. For more information, go to www.aspca.org/adoptNC.
