Vacation Bible School
Yelverton Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church will hold Vacation Bible School Aug. 2-6. Hours are 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Commencement and Fun Day will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9. For more information, call Dianne Etheridge at 919-934-1838.
Vacation Bible School is scheduled from 6 to 8:45 p.m. Aug. 2-5 at Sardis Baptist Church, 5444 Brogden Road, Smithfield The church will serve supper each night.
Vacation Bible School for children ages 3 to sixth grade is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Stevens Chapel Baptist Church, 2850 Stevens Chapel Road, Smithfield. The day will offer games, skits, music, crafts and food.
The Rev. Wayne Holder is the new pastor of St. James Church of Christ, 9573 N.C. 222 West, Middlesex. His installation is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at the church. Holder is the son of the late Sylvester and Ruby Holder. His father was a church bishop. Holder has been a member of St. James since childhood. He has been a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent and choir director there. A graduate of North Johnston High School, Holder retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1993. He has since worked for the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, IBM, Duke University and Time Warner Cable. He and his wife, Sharon, are the leaders of a nonprofit that provides food, hygiene items and other essentials to the needy.
An indoor-outdoor tag sale will get under way at 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Progressive Men’s Club building, 1208 Old Goldsboro Road, Smithfield. The sale, a project of Green Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, will offer clothing and other items. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be for sale.

A Bible study for women will begin Sept. 8 at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 1082 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The group will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays for 12 weeks.
