Four Apex families have their family dogs home with them because the pets had up-to-date rabies vaccinations when they came in contact with a raccoon that Wake County officials said they confirmed Monday was rabid.
The raccoon was in the New Hill Olive Chapel and Olive Dairy roads area.
Sue Lynn Ledford, county community health director, said the dogs were given rabies booster shots and sent home.
Animals that do not have the rabies vaccination that state law requires and that come into contact with a rabid animal have to be destroyed or their owners have to agree to pay for a six-month quarantine.
