Cary earned the eighth-place ranking, with .81 violent crimes and 2.62 property crimes per 1,00 people.

To compile its list, SafeWise looked at FBI data from 2012 that tracks violent crimes of aggravated assault, rape, murder and robbery and property crimes of arson, burglary, larceny and motor-vehicle theft. It calculated the chance of crimes happening out of 1,000.

The company considered towns and cities with a population over 5,000.

Fuquay-Varina came in at No. 40 on the list. It had 4.38 violent crimes and 7.53 property crimes per 1,000 people.

Pinehurst topped the list.
