Cary woman told police that fight preceded stabbing

A woman who was stabbed in her apartment late last month told police that her assailant had gotten into an altercation with a man she had met the previous evening.

Jason Vern Greenlee, 30, of 105-W Ribbon Lane in Cary has been in the Wake County jail since April 29, when police charged him with attempted murder and kidnapping. Police have accused Greenlee of holding Stephanie Cary and her two children at knifepoint before an emergency response team forced its way into their apartment and arrested him.

In court records made public Thursday, Stephanie Cary told police that the night before the stabbing, she went to visit a friend at another friend’s apartment who also lived in the Amberwood Apartments at Lochmere. Cary told investigators that Greenlee followed her to the friend’s apartment and remained outside in the parking lot during her visit, court records show.

Cary told police that about 30 minutes after she went to bed for the evening, she heard someone knocking on her front door. When she answered, two men who were at her friend’s apartment got into an argument with Greenlee about damage to one of the men’s motor vehicles, court records show.

A fight ensued among the three men, and one of them struck Greenlee with a chair, Cary told police. She told police she tried to flee the apartment, but Greenlee grabbed her by the legs and pulled her into the master bedroom, court records show.

Cary told police that Greenlee stabbed her in the right side of the head and cut her on her arms and face using both a knife and scissors, court records show.

Neighbors called police just before 5:45 a.m., authorities reported.

Greenlee allowed two small children to leave the apartment uninjured. Cary also walked out of the apartment after the attack.

Police took Greenlee into custody just before 9 a.m., court records show.

Investigators recovered a pair of scissors, a knife, financial and identification cards and a cellphone from the apartment, court records show.

Greenlee remains in custody at the Wake County jail under $3 million bail, a jail spokeswoman said Thursday.
