Apex gets the last laugh

The Apex Post 124 American Legion baseball team has an ongoing joke that pokes fun at its own inability to hold onto leads. As the saying goes, “That’s Apex baseball.”

After holding off Garner Post 232 twice to take two of three games last weekend, however, Post 124 may need to look for new material.

In the rubber match of the series Sunday night in Garner, Apex Post 124 twice surrendered leads before finally overtaking and holding off Garner 8-6.

After tying the game in the top of the eighth, Apex took the lead in the ninth inning when Joey Roach scored from third base on a Kyle May groundball to the right side of the infield.

In the bottom of the ninth, Apex starting pitcher Keaton Oaks finally shut down Post 232 as he retired the side in order for the first time since the first inning to nail down the complete game victory.

“They joke all the time – a lot of our guys are from Apex – and we seem to always have an issue when we get ahead then we let somebody come back on us,” Post 124 coach Tim Harrell said. “But we’ve got some guys from Panther Creek and guys from Holly Springs that stepped up tonight and throughout the whole series that every time we got behind, they didn’t let them sit back.”

Down 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, C.J. Schmitt helped Garner (13-3) answer once again with a three-run blast that pushed Garner out in front yet again.

Despite 13 hits on the night, Schmitt’s blast accounted for the last of the Garner run production as Post 232 stranded eight runners for the game and at least a runner in seven of nine innings.

.”Post 232 won the opening game of the series behind a strong pitching performance from Joe Mackey.
