At the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Track & Field championships at N.C. A&T State University’s Aggie Stadium on June 15, Cary Academy graduate Thomas Graham ran his final high school race.
In the boys’ two-mile run, Graham earned silver in 8:56.56 behind Edward Cheserek of Newark, N.J., who clocked in at 8:55.12.
Graham, bound for Stanford, knew he would have his hands full with Cheserek, the national cross country champion with U.S. records to his credit.
“I just wanted to be within striking distance of him,” Graham said. “I just wanted to be right on his shoulder as much as possible so I could cover that move.

“I’m a little disappointed that the first mile was so slow, but I’m really happy with how I closed.”
Graham entered the June 16 one-mile race but did not run it.
