Part of North Harrison Avenue to close in Cary for railroad repairs

North Harrison Avenue will be closed from Chatham Street to Chapel Hill Road Monday and Tuesday to allow Norfolk Southern Railroad to make repairs to its railroad crossing.

The road will be closed from 5 a.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The repairs come after Norfolk Southern received complaints about the railroad crossing being rough on vehicles, said Lamar Brown, an assistant track supervisor with the company. This should smooth out the crossing for drivers, he said.

Crews working on behalf of the Town of Cary will resurface part of the road, as needed, to help improve the approach and departure near the tracks.

“After they are done with their work, we are going to see if there’s any places that we need to fill in,” town spokeswoman Deanna Hawkes said.

Norfolk Southern Railroad also plans to make improvements to its crossing at Northeast Maynard Road near the intersection of Maynard Road and East Chatham Street. This work will require a railroad crossing closure on Wednesday, March 16 because the entire crossing will be removed and raised to the level of the parallel CSX line.

Brown said the N.C. Department of Transportation will provide detour signs.

C-Tran Routes 3, 4, 5 and 6 may experience some delays, but all stops will be served.

Tuesday is the North Carolina primary election. The nearby Herb Young Community Center across from Town Hall is a poll site.
