Book drive

The Cary Family YMCA’s Wake Up and Read Book Drive will collect new and gently used books for ages 12 and younger through Monday, March 2, at 101 YMCA Drive. The YMCA’s goal is to collect 100,000 books for schools, community centers and child care facilities in Wake County.

Hemlock Bluffs

The Stevens Nature Center will host activities for kids at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve, 2616 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary. All classes cost $12 for Cary residents and $16 for non-residents unless another price is given. To register, call 919-387-5980. Here’s the schedule:

Circus Camp

The Holly Springs Cultural Center will host ages 5-14 as they learn about clowning, clown make-up, juggling, magic and balloon animals from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, through Friday, Feb. 13, or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, through Friday, Feb. 27, at 300 W. Ballentine St. Drop-off is at 8:30 a.m. and participants must be picked up by 5:30 p.m.

Register for $150 for Holly Springs residents or $225 for non-residents, with a $45 supply fee, with course code #15180 for the class beginning on Feb. 9 or course code #15182 for the class beginning on Feb. 23.

Center for Volunteer Caregiving

The Center for Volunteer Caregiving’s volunteer orientation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 1150 SE Maynard Road, suite 210, Cary. The center’s volunteers help local seniors and adults with disabilities by providing transportation, in-home services and support for caregivers. Cary’s School of Government

Cary residents can apply to learn about their local government in the annual School of Government through Friday, Feb. 13. The class is eight sessions long, and will meet from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays from March 25 through April 29, and on Saturday, April 11, and Saturday, April 25. Founder’s Day 5k

The second annual Apex Kiwanis Founder’s Day 5k & Play Road Race will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 28, at the N.C. D.O.C. Office of Staff Development and Training’s West Parking Lot, 2211 Schieffelin Road, Apex.

Registration for the 5k costs $25 for adults and $20 for ages 17 and younger through Saturday, Feb. 14. Beer & Bacon Festival

The Beer & Bacon Festival will come to Cary on Saturday, March 28, at Koka Booth Amphitheatre, 8003 Regency Parkway, Cary. Guests will sample international beers and wines, and enjoy tasting stations from Triangle restaurants. There will be live music, a butchering class and exhibits.
