Cary honors volunteers

Cary honored volunteers at the annual Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Volunteer Awards:

Abilities Tennis Association of North Carolina and Western Wake Tennis Association won the Partner Organization of the Year award.

Will Ammons won the Senior Volunteer Award.

Gary Craven won the Parks & Trails Award.

Jim Ellard won the Don Smith Award.

Pat Fish won the Events Volunteer Award.

Kevin Jones won the Distinguished New Coach Award.

Saskia Leary won the Cultural Arts Award.

Lee Parker won the Herb Young Award.

Doug Smith won the Outstanding Teen Award.

Girl Scouts earn awards

Carly Stines of Cary and Anjali Velu of Morrisville earned Silver Awards, the second-highest achievement in Girl Scouting. For their project, they worked with Wake County Parks and Recreation to teach classes about snakes, make education kits and set up booths at the Creepy Crabtree Festival and Long Leaf Pine Festival.

Carly is the daughter of Reid and Susan Stines. Anjali is the daughter of Vijay and Arthi Velu of Morrisville. Both girls are members of Troop 374 led by Susan Stines and Cindy Irwin.
