Community Notes: Aug. 16-22

Hemlock Bluffs

The Stevens Nature Center hosts activities for kids at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve, 2616 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary. Registration costs $12 for Cary residents and $16 for non-residents unless another price is given. 919-387-5980.

Here’s the schedule:

▪ Curious Creatures: Butterflies and Bumblebees (ages 5-8): 2-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17.

▪ Nature Nuts: Lizards (ages 3-5 with a parent): 10-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21. $10 for Cary residents and $13 for non-residents.

▪ Kids Fun-Days: Bugs Made Easy! (ages 5-8): 1-3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21.

▪ Young Ecologists: Hemlock Bluffs Mythbusters (ages 10-13): 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22.

▪ Junior Naturalist: Deer are Near! (ages 5-8 with a parent): 2-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23. $8 for Cary residents and $10 for non-residents.

▪ Kids Fun-Days: Cruising in the Creek (ages 5-8): 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 27.

▪ Night Out in Nature (ages 8-12): 6-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28. $18 for Cary residents, $23 for non-residents.

▪ Curiosity Club: Totally Into Turtles! (ages 5-8): 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 29.

CERT training

Cary’s Community Emergency Response Team is accepting enrollment until Friday, Aug. 21, for a disaster survival training from Friday, Aug. 28, through Sunday, Aug. 30.

Participants will learn about preparedness, search and rescue, medical care and more. The class is open to ages 18 and older and ages 14 to 17 with a parent.

Fort Fisher aquarium trip

A bus trip to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, leaving at 8 a.m. sharp from Bass Lake Park, 900 Bass Lake Road, Holly Springs.

The trip is planned for ages 8 and older. Registration is $15 for Holly Springs residents and $20 for non-residents. 919-557-2496.

Archery 101

An archery class for ages 8 and older is 3-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Sugg Farm at Bass Lake, 2401 Grigsby Ave., Holly Springs.

Hearts & Hooves Golf Tournament

The Hearts & Hooves Golf Tournament by nonprofits CORRAL Riding Center and Advancing the Heart begins with check-in at 7:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at Prestonwood Country Club, 300 Prestonwood Parkway, Cary. Registration costs $125 per person or $500 for a group of four.

CPR classes

The Morrisville Fire Rescue Department offers free CPR and automatic external defibrillator certification classes for Morrisville residents from 7-10 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month at Morrisville Fire/Rescue Station #1, 200 Town Hall Drive.

Triangle Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech

The Triangle Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech starts with registration and check-in at 8:15 a.m. and the walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at the American Tobacco Trail, 1305 White Oak Church Road, Apex.

Registration costs $20 for adults and $10 for children and teenagers younger than 18. All proceeds go to the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North Carolina.

It’s A Small World Celebration

Koka Booth Amphitheatre’s Tuesday for Tots event from Tuesday, Aug. 4, has been canceled and added to the It’s A Small World Celebration from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at 8003 Regency Parkway, Cary. The celebration includes performances from local groups representing countries around the world, crafts, face painting and more.

Parekh Family Foundation fundraiser

A fundraising gala with a silent auction, dinner and entertainment by comedians Anish Shah and Kamran Hamid is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at One Eleven Place, 111 Realtors Way, Cary. Tickets cost $125.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fundraiser

Chick-fil-A of Apex will host a 5k to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, starting in the parking lot of Home Depot, 1000 Vision Drive, Apex. The race is planned to end around 10:30 a.m.

Registration for the 5k is $25 and registration for the one-mile fun run is $15. Prices increase by $5 the day of the race.

Cary Scavenger Hunt

The Cary Scavenger Hunt starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center, 119 Ambassador Loop, Cary.

Registration costs $50 for a family or adult team of up to four people. Registration for corporate teams costs $100 for one team, $175 for two teams and $225 for three teams.

Veterans Fall Festival

The Veterans Fall Festival of live music, arts and crafts, food trucks and a silent auction will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 7383, 522 Reedy Creek Road, Cary. 919-467-1188,


The Beericana festival of craft beer and music is 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Sugg Farm Park, 2401 Grigsby Ave., Holly Springs. The festival has grown from last year’s inaugural event to include up to 70 breweries, food trucks and Americana, roots, folk and rock bands.

VIP tickets for entry at noon cost $75. General admission tickets cost $45 and designated driver tickets cost $15.

Dragon Boat Festival

The second annual Dragon Boat Festival with dragon boat competitions, Asian foods, cultural exhibits and performances is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Koka Booth Amphitheatre, 8003 Regency Parkway, Cary. Admission is free.

BBQ, Blues and Brews

The Fuquay-Varina Downtown Association’s BBQ, Blues and Brews fundraiser is 3-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, downtown.


The Triangle Oktoberfest will be from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at Koka Booth Amphitheatre, 8003 Regency Parkway, Cary.

Tickets for ages 16 and older cost $20 for Saturday, $15 for Sunday and $30 for both days. Tickets for either day are $5 for ages 6 to 15 and free for 5 and younger.

Chatham Street Chowdown

The Chatham Street Chowdown food truck rally is noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in downtown Cary.
