American Legion honors students

Fuquay-Varina American Legion Post 116 presented the Boy’s State Medal to local students Tanner Yates, Benjamin Ferez, Andrew Durand and Andrew Drda for their participation in the 2015 Boy’s State program.

Cary American Legion post 67 presented medals and certificates to eight NJROTC Cadets in October at Cary High School. Thomas Avelsgard, Gabriel Godwin, Garold Smith and Zach Spendley were recognized for Leadership/Military Excellence, and John Bumgarner, Matthew Eastman, Adam Hayes and Joseph Jeter for Scholarship/Scholastic Achievement.

Apex girl competes in pageant

Makayla Bridges of Apex was chosen to participate in the 2015 Miss Jr. Teen pageant on Nov. 15. If Makayla wins the title of Miss Jr. Teen, she will represent the Raleigh area at the National Competition in Florida.

Rotary clubs raise money

Members of the Cary Central and Cary-Kildaire Rotary Clubs organized a presentation for Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust (C.A.R.T.) Week in November. Lorenzo Meija spoke on the disease’s prevention, impacts and research. The event raised $1,397 for Alzheimer’s research.

Student Athlete of the Week

Green Hope High School’s Conner Redick was named the Raleigh Sport’s Club Student Athlete of the Week on Oct. 14. Joshua Berkowitz of Cary High School was Student Athlete of the Week on Oct. 28.
