Indian classical concert
The Carnatic Vocal Concert Centenary Celebration will honor the late Indian classical music legend Bharat Ratna M.S. Subbulakshmi from 5:30-9 p.m. in the Main Hall of the Hindu Society of North Carolina Temple, 309 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville. She was born in 1916 and was the first musician awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Her great-granddaughter, S. Aishwarya, will perform. An opening reception will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 27, for Cary Visual Art’s new gallery at The Cary News office on the second floor of The Cary theater, 122 E. Chatham St. The group plans to curate exhibits and host other arts-related activities at the gallery, which opened in late April.
The inaugural exhibition, “Best Shot: Showcasing The N&O’s Best,” will be on display through June 4. The collection showcases some of the best photography from The News & Observer’s award-winning photojournalists.
N.C. Symphony Summerfest
Tributes to film composer John Williams, late rocker David Bowie and Beethoven highlight the North Carolina’s Summerfest concert series that kick off at Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre Saturday, May 28. Tickets can be purchased at boothamphitheatre.com or ncsymphony.org/summerfest. Each show features an instrument zoo with gates opening before the shows for picnics. A roving judge selects the best picnic spread before each show. Children 12 and younger are admitted free on the lawn.
