Community Notes: June 8-11

Here are upcoming events for Apex, Cary, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs and Morrisville.

Hemlock Bluffs

The Stevens Nature Center hosts activities at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve, 2616 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary. Pre-registration is required. Cost for children’s programs: $12 for Cary residents and $16 for nonresidents unless another price is given. 919-387-5980

▪ Curious Creatures: Lizards (ages 5-8): 1:30-3:30 p.m. Monday, June 13.

▪ Eco-Express: Lizards and Snakes (ages 8-12): 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 14.

▪ Discovery Days Mini-Camps: The Secret Forest (ages 5-7): 1:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, through Friday, June 17. Cost: $54 for Cary residents; $68 for nonresidents.

Blood drives

Blood may be donated at the American Red Cross Cary Blood Donation Center, 3700 Regency Parkway, Suite 150, Cary: Mondays, 1:30-6:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Thursdays, 1:30-7 p.m.; Fridays, 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. redcrossblood.org

An additional drive is from 3-7:30 p.m. Friday, June 10, at the Kraft Family YMCA, 8921 Holly Springs Road, Apex.

Soccer

Registration is under way for the Metamorphosis Soccer league for children ages 8-12 at Grace Church, 3725 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary. The coed fun league for all skill levels will run June to July. Cost: $35. For more information and to register, go to trygrace.com/soccer or call 919-362-9355.

Youth football, cheerleading

Registration is open through Friday, June 10, for Holly Springs youth football for children ages 7 to 12. Youth cheerleading registration is also open through Friday, June 10, for children ages 6 to 12.

Registration is at the Hunt Recreation Center, 301 Stinson Ave. Nonresidents can register Monday, June 6, to Friday, June 10. Fee is $60 for residents, $90 for nonresidents. Age as of Aug. 1, 2016. Registration is open until filled. For more information, call 919-557-9600 or visit bit.ly/1T9Wlht.

Great Railway Chase

New Hope Valley Railway will present The Great Railway Chase at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at the rail yard, 3900 Bonsal Road, New Hill. Costumed soldiers will recreate the Civil War battle throughout the day.

The event continues at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 12. Cost is $24 for adults, $22 for adults 60 and older, $22 for children ages 2-12 and free for children under age 2. A ticket is required to enter the rail yard. bit.ly/1WsBmYe

Cut-a-thon fundraiser

A cut-a-thon fundraiser for families affected by cancer is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, June 12, at Salons by JC, 2476 Walnut St., Cary.

Services provided include haircuts for adults and children, manicures, massages and facials. No appointments required. There also will be a silent auction, raffles and baked goods for sale. Checks and cash preferred.

Physical therapy classes

Back in Action Physical Therapy will teach a free class on the prevention and treatment of neck, shoulder and back pain at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at Hunt Recreation Center, 301 Stinson Ave., Holly Springs. Yard sale

Cary’s annual yard sale is 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Cary Senior Center, 120 Maury O’Dell Place. Proceeds will be used to support the senior center and participating clubs. Donations can be dropped off on Thursday, June 16, and Friday, June 17.

Walk Green

The BAPS Charities Walk Green fundraiser begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at Cedar Fork Community Center, 1050 Town Hall Drive, Morrisville. For more information: bit.ly/25kecoe.

Youth baseball & softball

Registration for youth fall baseball and softball in Cary opens Monday, June 20, and runs through Sunday, July 10. The season runs August through October.

Baseball: Divisions for ages 8-16; age as of April 30, 2016. Softball: Divisions for ages 8-17; age as of Jan. 1, 2016. Cost: $50 for residents, $75 for nonresidents. Register online or at a community center; first-come, first-served basis. For more information, go to bit.ly/1q09tkU.

Kids and Cops Soccer Night

Holly Springs police officers will join players from Holly Springs middle schools at 7 p.m. Friday, June 24, in two coed showdowns between the Holly Grove Bulldogs and the Holly Ridge Hornets at Parrish Womble Park, 1201 Grigsby Ave.

Police vs. fire department

The Holly Springs Police Department will square off against the town’s Fire Department in a softball game at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the North Main Athletic Complex, 1151 N. Main St. Free.

Suicide prevention

Registration is open for the Out of the Darkness Walk, Fuquay-Varina, scheduled from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at the South Park trail head of the Jeff Wells Environmental Trail.

The Fuquay-Varina Police Department is partnering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to host the fourth annual fundraising event. For more information and to register: bit.ly/1R6mF4w.

Jump rope camps

Registration is under way for summer camps sponsored by the Apex Skip-Its jump rope team. The first camp will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 25-29. The second camp will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 1-5.

The festival is Friday, Aug. 5, through Saturday, Aug. 6, at Koka Booth Amphitheatre, 8003 Regency Parkway, Cary.

Tickets for the whole hog pig picking from 6-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, are $49 in advance and $55 the day of the event. The event is from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. Miles for Melanoma

The Miles for Melanoma 5K run/walk fundraiser will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at Wake Med Soccer Park, 201 Soccer Park Drive, Cary. Registration cost is $25 by 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, for competitive runners; $55 after. Free for noncompetitive runners and walkers who register by 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26; $25 after. BBQ, Blues and Brews

Registration is under way for the BBQ, Blues and Brews barbecue cook-off competition in downtown Fuquay-Varina. The fundraiser is scheduled from 1-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, on Broad Street in the historic Varina district and also will feature bluegrass music and craft beer.
