Wilma Ross Ferrell Green

Wilma Ross Ferrell Green, beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Sister died peacefully in the early morning hours of December 13, 2012 at Uni-Health Post Acute Care Raleigh (formerly the Oaks of Carolina). Wilma was born in Durham, NC, the fifth daughter of Ezra Lee and Effie Ellis Ferrell.

She graduated from Lowes Grove High School in Durham and later attended North Carolina State University. Wilma was active in both the Junior Woman’s and Woman’s Club of Cary, NC serving as President of both organizations. She also helped organize the Friends of the Library that founded the first library in Cary. She was a Brownie Scout troop leader for all of her daughters and actively supported them in Girl Scouts.

Wilma loved her family, her church, her community, and playing bridge with friends. She was a Charter Member of St. Paul’s Christian Church and served in many capacities over the years. Most notably, she was one of first women ordained as an Elder and held the distinction of serving as the first female Chairman of the Board for her church. Although she could not attend her beloved church in recent years due to declining health, Wilma always responded positively to the prayers and hymns she loved so well.

Wilma is survived by her husband of 68 blessed years, H. J. “Boe” Green, daughters, Susan Green Patterson and husband Larry, Martha Green Edwards and husband Michael, and Jane Wilma Green. She is also survived by grandchildren Joseph Neal Sinodis and wife Chris, Emily Edwards Mooney and husband Marc, Jonathan Michael Edwards and wife Brittaney, David Ross Sinodis and wife Amanda, Thomas Green Sinodis and wife Tiffany, Christopher Libera Patterson, and Austin Wynne Patterson and wife Michelle. Six great-granddaughters include Katherine Elizabeth (Kate) Sinodis, Eva Edwards Mooney, Lillian Moriah (Lily) Sinodis, Ellis Arden Mooney, Isabella Jane Edwards, and Evelyn Mikayla Patterson. Another important part of Wilma’s family is her “chosen” daughter and friend of over forty years, Dilly Toomer.

Wilma is also survived by her sister Virginia Ferrell Brooks, two sisters-in-law, Nell Green Sears and Emma “Tet” Green Walton. She also has a host of loving nieces and nephews, but particularly leaves to cherish her memory Larry Brooks and wife Bonnie and Ned Green and wife Margaret. Wilma was predeceased by sisters Louise, Bertie, and Eula.

Visitation will be held at St. Paul’s Christian Church, 3331 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607 on Saturday, December 15, 2012 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. A Celebration of Wilma’s Life will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary, followed by interment at the Columbarium.

The family would like to particularly thank Ms. Karron Strickland and Ms. Stephanie Smith, who along with Wilma’s husband and all of her daughters, took such wonderful care of Wilma during her lengthy illness. We would also like to thank the nurses and assistants at Uni-Health Post Acute Care Raleigh for the care and attention they gave Wilma in the nearly six years of her residence there.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Paul’s Christian Church Outreach Endowment Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern North Carolina.
